Marathon Monday

Four years ago I snapped my first photo at the Boston Marathon (seen at the end of this post) and I’ve been captivated ever since. This year however I was not only there to see the incredible endurance of the elite runners, but also to cheer on a good friend, Nancy Gould, who raised over $13,000 for Dana-Farber and cancer research! Her run was unfortunately stopped a few blocks short when tragedy struck, so in light of all of the horrific images we’ve seen, and whatever nonsense is happening on the courthouse right now, here are just a few shots from Monday to remind us all that the Boston Marathon is still one of the greatest sporting events in the world.

2012 Travels

When I’m not photographing your wedding I’m probably traveling, or daydreaming about traveling, and until recently I’ve left my camera at home. I’m either in work mode or I’m not, so for the sake of my husband, and an actual vacation, I’ve left my work at work. But having picked up my old film cameras again, in combination with the iPhone, I can take one shot and move on. When I have my work camera on me it becomes a thing, I can’t simply take a photo and walk away, I have to take every possible angle, find the right light, debate if there’s a more interesting subject nearby, etc. Luckily though, an alternate camera brings with it a new attitude, so here are just a few of the many things I saw in 2012. From glaciers in Iceland, to the cliffs in Kauai, to simply wandering around Oregon, San Francisco and New England, I’m inspired to shoot what I love again, the world.

Half of these images are on Fujicolor Pro 400 film, processed and scanned by Richards Photo Lab. The other half of are from the glorious iPhone 4s, processed with Instagram. And surprisingly, they’re not all from the camera you would assume.

Office Assistant Needed Immediately

After six years of being a small business of one, the time has come to hire an assistant. Truth be told I am a tad OCD, and because of this, I have always tackled everything on my own. However my workload for the season has started to win the battle of my sanity, so here is where you come in.

I’m looking for a technically proficient photographer or designer familiar with In-Design, Lightroom and Photoshop. (I’ll also need help setting up your workstation, installing programs, etc.) Someone to design albums, select images for submissions, research, run errands, and I hope in the near future, post-process, so a keen eye for color and detail is a must. And please note, I’m not looking for a photography assistant, I shoot primarily on my own.

To start I’m looking for someone just one afternoon a week, 1PM-6PM (hours are flexible) until additional work may be available, and the pay is $12/hour.

If this sounds like a good fit for you, and you’re willing to commit to the position through the end of the wedding season, roughly through October, please email me: ashley@aodell.com. Include your resume, some general info about yourself, and your reason for wanting the position. Also please describe your skill level with Lightroom, In-Design, and Photoshop on a Mac.

I’m looking to set up interviews as soon as possible and get someone in here stat!

The Importance of Wedding Photography

This is my grandparents wedding photo from March 1929, one of my most valued possessions. Wedding photography has come a long way from the time of studio portraits and hand color prints, but it’s value has never changed. A single image can speak volumes.

Another First

This has been the best year of my life. Yesterday Eric and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary, and after spending almost a decade together, it’s fun to have a 1st again. Neither of us thought getting married would feel any different than cohabitating, but it does, it’s even more fantastic.

We packed a lot in this past year, we were married in Italy (yes it was amazing), I opened my studio, we moved (goodbye Allston), traveled to new places, Eric went on tour (I’m married to a rockstar, at least he is to me), and most importantly, enjoyed every single day we had together. I don’t share many personal details online, but I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunities we’ve had, and the people we’ve shared them with, so thank you to those who have played an integral role in our lives.

Moving forward, I’m excited to share in several couples weddings this year, and wish you the same happiness I feel everyday.

And I couldn’t close without posting an image from our amazing friend and photographer Channing. Thank you for documenting a day in our lives in such a beautiful and meaningful way.
